Risk factors for dementia

چکیده
There is little doubt that dementia is a very common cause of disability and dependency in our society. Since dementia of whatever type is usually more common with increasing age, then as population demographics change, so will the prevalence of dementia. Dementia is a generic term and the objective for clinicians, once dementia is suspected, is to attempt to define the cause. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, and in most centres vascular dementia would feature as the next most common aetiology. In some centres, Lewy body dementia is the second most common cause. Mixed Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia would also feature high on the list at most centres. This article will focus on risk factors for dementia and will concentrate only on Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. The risk factors for these will be discussed, and, since there have been significant advances in our understanding of the genetic component of Alzheimer’s disease in particular, there is a separate section on genetic contribution.

متن کاملA Bayesian Approach to Identifying New Risk Factors for Dementia
Dementia is one of the most disabling and burdensome health conditions worldwide. In this study, we identified new potential risk factors for dementia from nationwide longitudinal population-based data by using Bayesian statistics. We first tested the consistency of the results obtained using Bayesian statistics with those obtained using classical frequentist probability for 4 recognized risk fa...
متن کاملPrestroke Vascular Pathology and the Risk of Recurrent Stroke and Poststroke Dementia.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Improved short-term survival after stroke has necessitated quantifying risk and risk factors of long-term sequelae after stroke (ie, recurrent stroke and dementia). This risk may be influenced by exposure to cardiovascular risk factors before the initial stroke. Within the population-based Rotterdam Study, we determined the long-term risk of recurrent stroke and dementia,...
متن کاملExplaining The Role Of Genetics And Risk Factors For Dementia To Patients In The Primary Care Setting
1. Overview Families are often concerned about the possibility that genetics may play some role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Genetic mechanisms impact the risk for dementia via inherited risk factors, age-related damage to otherwise healthy genes or medical/environmental damage to genes. Genetic factors can impact risk for Alzheimer’s disease, Frontotemporal dementia and oth...
متن کاملSummary of the evidence on modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline and dementia: A population-based perspective
An estimated 47 million people worldwide are living with dementia in 2015, and this number is projected to triple by 2050. In the absence of a disease-modifying treatment or cure, reducing the risk of developing dementia takes on added importance. In 2014, the World Dementia Council (WDC) requested the Alzheimer's Association evaluate and report on the state of the evidence on modifiable risk f...
